The course covers selected topics of algebra, trigonometry and statistical methods in research. Students learn how to simplifying algebraic expressions and solving linear equations with one or two variables, vectors,proportions, and logarithms. The course relates mathematical theories to the field of life sciences and biology by providing relevant examples. Students learn how to use scientific notations, exponents, equations and inequalities.

Large part of the course is dedicated on peer-learning and flip class activities which are also reflected in the final students’ grade.Students are expected to take active participation in the flip class activities that will be scored as part of the final grade.

At the end of the course students are able to compare and contrast examples of mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, and variables. Students learn about the concept of statistical power and how this is linked to sample size, t-test and p-value, correlation and reliability.

Our innovative approach includes videos delivered in the student’s own time, one week of lab, quizzes and 4 exams. Because we understand that each student has a different pace of studying, we have introduced an innovative way of teaching using technology. The advantages of using videos is that students can study on their own time, going back to concepts they do not have a firm grasp on. Also, the courses offered through this approach give the flexibility of finishing in anywhere from 8 weeks to 1 year.
